Tuesdays, March 23, April 6, 13, 20 & 27
(Skip March 30 for time to knit)
5-7 p.m.

It’s much more fun to knit Fair Isle or other colorwork garments in the round. So what do you do when you want to make a cardigan or armholes, or a neckline? You use a steek! Steeks are waste stitches included in a colorwork garment that provide a space to cut (yes, cut) open a part of a garment such as the center front for a cardigan, armholes, or neck shaping. We’ll make a colorwork baby sweater/sampler and practice a variety of steeking techniques as we make it. We’ll talk about planning and placing steeks. There will be demonstrations of unreinforced, hand-sewn, felted, crocheted, and machine steeks. You’ll pick your favorite(s) to use in your sweater.

Homework: Please check and adjust your gauge before coming to class. And, cast on and complete the ribbing for your selected size.

Prerequisites: You must be able to cast on, bind off, increase and decrease, knit in the round, and correct simple mistakes like dropped stitches. Experience knitting with two colors is helpful but not required.

Materials: Cottage Creations Toddler’s Norsk Sweater and Cap pattern. Needles and sport weight yarn for the garment size you’d like to make.
